Democracy and Education John Dewey non-fiction
Dewey's prose is dry, no way around it, but his central idea (that education is growth itself, not preparation for some later life) will quietly rearrange how you think about school, work, even conversation. Read it slowly, arguing with him in the margins; that's the point.
Twenty Years at Hull House Jane Addams
Addams writes like someone thinking out loud about why comfortable idealism wasn't enough, and her account of ditching the "snare of preparation" to actually move in among Chicago's immigrant poor still stings a little. Slow and earnest in places, but her honesty about her own mistakes keeps it human.
