Faust: Der Tragödie erster Teil Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Deutsch
New Grub Street George Gissing
You get a painfully sharp look at literary ambition through Edwin Reardon’s scruples and poverty, set against Jasper Milvain’s cheerful careerism. It’s bleak, talk-heavy, and slow in places, but the clash between making art and making money still feels uncomfortably close to home.
The Humbugs of the World P. T. Barnum non-fiction
Yes, the great showman himself grousing about frauds, and the irony lands better than you'd expect. He goes after spirit mediums, quack medicines, the Moon Hoax, all in chatty anecdotes, and half the fun is watching him carefully separate his kind of humbug from the cruel kind.
