- A shipwrecked sailor stumbles into an Antarctic society where poverty is prestige, darkness is beautiful, and being killed is an honor, and the satire sneaks up on you. The yachtsmen who find the manuscript keep interrupting to argue about it, which is half the fun.
- A cathedral close called Paradise, a stranger dead at the foot of an old stair, and a guardian whose past is locked tight. Fletcher's quiet English scene-setting does the real work; the mystery is serviceable, the town is the pleasure.
