Babbitt Sinclair Lewis
You watch George F. Babbitt sell himself on Zenith’s booster slogans, country-club rituals, and respectable opinions, while a nagging sense of emptiness keeps breaking through. The satire is sharp and often funny, but its sympathy for his small rebellions makes the book sadder, and more human, than you expect.
Harding’s Luck E. Nesbit
Nesbit gets uncharacteristically tender here: Dickie, a lame boy from a Deptford slum, plants some odd seeds and wakes up in Jacobean England, whole and wanted. It's sadder and quieter than her usual romps, and the choice he faces at the end will stay with you.
Tarzan the Untamed Edgar Rice Burroughs
You get Tarzan at his most grief-driven here: after finding his estate destroyed and Jane apparently dead, he turns vengeance loose across wartime Africa. The action is brisk and vividly pulpy, though the racist wartime caricatures and colonial assumptions can make this a difficult read.
