- A jinn takes human shape and marries a princess, only to find she doesn't love him, and his soul depends on changing that. Zehowah's cool, logical questions about what love even is are the best part.
- Billy Byrne starts out as a genuinely unpleasant Chicago thug, no charm, no heart of gold, and watching Burroughs slowly earn his change aboard ship and on a very strange island is the whole fun. Pure pulp, fast and dated in spots, but oddly sincere.
- Fair warning, this is Verne at his bleakest: a burning cotton ship, then a raft, then hunger doing terrible things to decent people. But Kazallon's diary entries get shorter and rawer as hope shrinks, and if you can stomach the drawing of lots, it stays with you.
