Le Morte d’Arthur Thomas Malory
Fair warning, it's a slow, strange ride, knights jousting on repeat in old prose that takes some settling into. But if you let it work on you, Lancelot's divided heart and the whole doomed slide toward Camlann land with a sadness modern retellings rarely earn.
She H. Rider Haggard
Ayesha is the reason to go: a two-thousand-year-old queen who talks philosophy while casually terrifying everyone, and she gets stranger the closer you look. The Victorian adventure trappings creak a bit (and the colonial attitudes with them), but the ending in the caves genuinely unsettles.
The House of the Wolfings William Morris
Fair warning, Morris writes in deliberately old-fashioned prose that keeps breaking into verse, so it asks patience. But Thiodolf's choice, between a charmed hauberk that saves his life and the good of his folk, has real weight, and you can feel Tolkien taking notes.
