- Most of the fun is watching Linford Pratt, a law clerk who finds a dead millowner's will and quietly pockets it, scheme his way deeper into trouble. Unhurried Yorkshire crime in the old style, more chess game than thriller, good if you like watching plans curdle.
- Cherry-Garrard hauled sledges through the Antarctic winter dark at seventy below to collect penguin eggs, and writes about it with dry wit and real grief. It's long and it lingers on details, but if you like endurance stories told by an actual survivor, few compare.
