- These are trickster tales with teeth, jackals outwitting tigers, a lamb rolling home inside a drum singing to the wolves who want to eat him. Best in small doses before bed, and Jacobs' endnotes tracing where each story wandered from are half the fun if you like that sort of rabbit hole.
- Blackwood builds dread out of atmosphere rather than jump scares, so these occult doctor cases reward slow evening reading; the one about the sleepy French town where everyone moves like cats will stay with you. Skip it if you need pace, savor it if you like creeping unease.
- Poe's poems are best read aloud at night, when the hypnotic drumbeat of The Raven and the sad chime of Annabel Lee can really work on you. It's a small body of work, moody and musical, and if gothic melancholy isn't your thing, skip it.
