The Humbugs of the World P. T. Barnum non-fiction
Yes, the great showman himself grousing about frauds, and the irony lands better than you'd expect. He goes after spirit mediums, quack medicines, the Moon Hoax, all in chatty anecdotes, and half the fun is watching him carefully separate his kind of humbug from the cruel kind.
The Red Thumbmark R. Austin Freeman
You get Dr Thorndyke at his most methodical, examining the peculiar red thumbmark through fingerprints, chemistry, and patient laboratory work rather than theatrical hunches. It’s an early, somewhat leisurely detective novel, but the careful forensic texture feels rewarding if you like seeing an investigation built piece by piece.
