- You spend a languid weekend at Crome with Denis Stone, who is forever composing himself while sharper, stranger people, especially Mr Scogan, talk circles around him. It’s a dry, episodic country-house comedy, more interested in clever conversation and social absurdity than plot.
- You get sharp, funny dialogue and a surprisingly prickly look at class, language, and who gets to remake whom. Eliza Doolittle is far more than Higgins’s experiment, and the play’s ending leaves you thinking about her independence rather than settling comfortably into a romance.
- Richard is unbearable while he's winning and mesmerizing once he starts to lose, talking himself into and out of kingship in some of the most musical verse Shakespeare wrote. It's all poetry and no sword fights, so come for the language or not at all.
- You’ll enjoy Mr Pooter’s earnest attempts to maintain suburban dignity while friends, tradesmen, and his impossible son Lupin keep puncturing it. The diary is gently ridiculous rather than frantic, and its small humiliations feel oddly familiar, especially if you’ve ever taken your own minor household dramas too seriously.
- You watch the sharp young Isidore Beautrelet chase Lupin through French history, clues, and the cliffs of Étretat. It’s an old-fashioned, melodramatic puzzle, but the pleasure is real: Lupin’s charm keeps colliding with Beautrelet’s stubborn intelligence, and every answer opens another door.
- Dr. Primrose is so cheerfully certain of his own wisdom that you wince and grin as disaster after disaster lands on his family, and somehow the book stays gentle through all of it. Good when you want something old-fashioned and kind, with a sly wink underneath.
- Father Brown solves these mostly by understanding sinners better than detectives do, and in one story he calmly explains why a lie detector can't work on a truthful man. Read a couple at bedtime; they're short, odd, and more about human nature than clues.
