At the Back of the North Wind George MacDonald
You spend time with Diamond, a gentle, grave little boy who rides through the night in the North Wind’s hair, while London poverty and fairy-tale strangeness sit side by side. It’s dreamy, episodic, and sometimes frankly sad, but its kindness toward lonely, overlooked people stays with you.
Khaled F. Marion Crawford
A jinn takes human shape and marries a princess, only to find she doesn't love him, and his soul depends on changing that. Zehowah's cool, logical questions about what love even is are the best part.
Miss Marjoribanks Margaret Oliphant
Lucilla comes home from school determined to be a comfort to her widowed father, then quietly takes over the whole town instead, and Oliphant's dry narrator lets you laugh at her and root for her at once. If you like Trollope's Barchester, this sits happily beside it.
