Les Misérables Victor Hugo, translated by Isabel F. Hapgood
Yes, it's huge, and Hugo will stop everything for fifty pages on the Paris sewers, but Jean Valjean lifting that cart, or the bishop handing over his candlesticks, will sit in your chest for years. Skim the digressions if you must; the mercy at the center holds.
Mr. Britling Sees It Through H. G. Wells
Not the Wells of Martians, this is him watching the war arrive at an English country house in real time, and it shows, half comic house-party chatter, half raw grief. When Mr. Britling sits down to write to his son's German tutor, it wrecks you quietly.
The Enchanted Castle E. Nesbit
Nesbit lets four kids find a wishing ring that never quite does what they want, and she plays it half funny, half genuinely eerie. The scene where their homemade paper-faced audience comes to life still unsettles grown adults, in the best way, so don't assume it's only for children.
The Phantom of the Opera Gaston Leroux, translated by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos
You get a wonderfully melodramatic Gothic mystery, with hidden passages beneath the Paris Opera, a masked Erik, and Christine caught between fear, pity, and fascination. The narration can be delightfully over-the-top, but the underground atmosphere and Erik’s wounded loneliness linger after the thrills fade.
The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft George Gissing
You settle into Henry Ryecroft’s imagined retirement, where walks, weather, books, and memories become reasons to think more carefully about living. It’s quiet, discursive, and occasionally cranky rather than plot-driven, but his reflections on poverty, solitude, and the consolations of reading have an intimate, companionable pull.
