- Read it for the monsters more than the hero: Pecksniff oozing fake virtue over everyone, and Mrs. Gamp, the gin-soaked nurse who quotes an imaginary friend to win arguments. It's baggy and Martin himself takes a while to earn your patience, but the comedy is vicious and worth it.
