Poetry James Weldon Johnson
Johnson moves between Lift Every Voice and Sing and the sermon-poems of God's Trombones, where The Creation turns a Black preacher's cadence into verse. Formal skill and pulpit fire at once; the spoken power survives on the page.
Poetry Edgar Allan Poe
Poe's poems are best read aloud at night, when the hypnotic drumbeat of The Raven and the sad chime of Annabel Lee can really work on you. It's a small body of work, moody and musical, and if gothic melancholy isn't your thing, skip it.
The Comedy of Errors William Shakespeare
You get a wonderfully fast, physical farce from the twin Antipholuses and twin Dromios, with everyone confidently mistaking the wrong man for someone they know. It’s deliberately slight and noisy, but the escalating confusion, especially around Adriana’s furious domestic arguments, makes Shakespeare feel surprisingly loose and playful.
The Georgics Virgil, translated by John Dryden
Slow reading, sure, but Virgil makes bees feel like a tiny doomed empire and a plague among cattle genuinely heartbreaking, and the Orpheus story tucked into the end catches you off guard. Good for anyone who likes their nature writing shadowed by grief and civil war.
The Taming of the Shrew William Shakespeare
The fun is watching Kate and Petruchio trade insults at full speed, two clever people who've finally met their match. Fair warning, the "taming" itself sits uneasily now, and Kate's last speech will either charm you or make you argue with the page.
