Basil Wilkie Collins
Early Collins, before he learned restraint, and honestly that's the fun: a young man secretly marries a shopkeeper's daughter he saw once on an omnibus, and everything curdles from there. If you like your Victorian melodrama feverish and a bit unhinged, this scratches that itch.
Little Men Louisa May Alcott
You settle into Plumfield, where Jo and Professor Bhaer turn a lively household of boys into a rough-edged school of kindness, work, and second chances. Nat’s shy arrival and the daily scrapes make it warmly episodic, a little preachy at times, but deeply comforting if you like character over plot.
Romola George Eliot
You have to settle into its dense Renaissance Florence, but Romola rewards you with a woman growing beyond her sheltered life while Tito Melema’s charm curdles and Savonarola’s certainty presses in. It’s morally serious, richly observed, and best when you want a slow, thoughtful read.
