Clotel William Wells Brown
You get a fierce, unsettling blend of story, testimony, and historical argument, with Clotel’s attempts to protect her family set against the hypocrisy of American freedom. The novel can feel episodic and openly didactic, but Brown’s anger, especially in the scenes of separation and pursuit, keeps it painfully immediate.
Democracy and Education John Dewey non-fiction
Dewey's prose is dry, no way around it, but his central idea (that education is growth itself, not preparation for some later life) will quietly rearrange how you think about school, work, even conversation. Read it slowly, arguing with him in the margins; that's the point.
