- Seven cold, grim little stories, and worth it just for To Build a Fire, where a man's whole fate hangs on wet matches and a dog who knows better than he does. Read it in winter with something hot; the title story's ending is wickedly clever.
- If you like Golden Age puzzles, this is a tidy one: Anthony Gethryn, restless after the war, pokes into a cabinet minister's murder and lays out his whole solution in a long letter at the end. It's a bit stiff and dated, but fair and clever.
- You’d enjoy this for its wonderfully strange Pacific-island premise, where explorers uncover ancient beings preserved in a temple and get drawn into their old feud. It’s slower and more earnest than Haggard’s adventure novels, but the mix of lost-world romance, prophecy, and uneasy reflections on civilization has a peculiar, dreamlike pull.
