Erewhon Samuel Butler
You'll come for the strange country where being sick is a crime and stealing gets you sympathy, and stay for the Book of the Machines, which reads like someone worrying about AI in 1872. Fair warning, it's more essay than adventure, but the ideas keep biting.
Golf Stories P. G. Wodehouse
The Oldest Member corners some poor soul on the clubhouse terrace and off he goes, spinning tales of lovers whose fates hinge entirely on their handicaps. You don't need to play golf, you just need to enjoy watching Wodehouse treat a missed putt like a Greek tragedy.
The Turmoil Booth Tarkington
Bibbs Sheridan, the frail son who'd rather write poetry than worship his father's roaring factories, is easy to root for, and Tarkington makes you feel that smoke-choked boomtown in your lungs. It moves gently and moralizes a bit, but if you like quiet rebels, this lands.
What’s Wrong with the World G. K. Chesterton non-fiction
You get Chesterton’s cheerful contrarian mind at full stretch here, arguing for small property, family life, and ordinary people against modern systems, with jokes arriving in the middle of serious arguments. It’s lively but polemical and often dated, especially on women, so you read it for the provocations rather than a ready-made political program.
