A Place in Stories
Linked story cycles, each about one town or district.
- Nothing much happens in these stories, and that's the point: small humiliations, missed chances, whole lives caught in a glance. If you can sit with quiet sadness, the last one, with Gabriel at the party and snow falling over Ireland, will stay with you for years.
- Quiet, sad, and strangely tender. You follow George Willard, the young reporter everyone confesses to, through a town of people aching to be understood, like Wing Biddlebaum, terrified of his own restless hands.
- Almost nothing happens in it, and that's the whole gift: you board with Mrs. Todd, the herb-gathering landlady in a small Maine harbor town, and just visit people, her mother on Green Island, an old captain with strange stories. If you're patient, it feels like actual rest.
- Almost nothing happens, and that's the point: it's Miss Matty and the other ladies of a small town practicing their "elegant economy," fussing over lace and a cow in flannel. Gentle and funny, with sudden little griefs underneath, best read slowly with tea.
- Leacock pokes fun at the small-town Mariposans so gently you end up loving them, and the chapter where the steamer Mariposa Belle sinks in about six feet of water is genuinely funny. Fair warning, nothing much happens here, which is exactly the point.
- Uncle Julius spins these plantation folk tales for his new Northern employers, and every one just happens to serve his own quiet interests, which is half the fun. The dialect takes a few pages to settle into, but under the conjure magic there's real grief about slavery.
Poems rather than stories: the dead of one Illinois town speak their own epitaphs.
