Black Lives in America
Narratives from slavery, memoirs, essays, poems and novels by Black American authors, from Phillis Wheatley's poems of 1773 to George Schuyler's Black No More in 1931.
- Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass non-fictionYou read Douglass’s account for the fierce clarity of a man teaching himself to read while slavery tries to make him doubt his own mind. The scenes with Covey are brutal, but his intelligence, anger, and hard-won control make every page feel startlingly present.
- Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl non-fiction
Published in 1861 under the name Linda Brent; the author was Harriet Jacobs.
- Twelve Years a Slave non-fictionYou follow Solomon Northup’s clear, measured account as a free man is forced into slavery, where practical details, sudden violence, and small acts of courage accumulate with awful force. It’s painful reading, but his precise eye and refusal to surrender his identity make the book feel startlingly immediate.
- Up from Slavery non-fictionWashington tells his life plainly, no self-pity, from sleeping under a boardwalk on his way to Hampton to having his students fire their own bricks at Tuskegee. You may argue with his politics (Du Bois did), but his patience and stubbornness stay with you.
- The Souls of Black Folk non-fictionDu Bois writes like a scholar who refuses to hide his heart, and the chapter on his infant son's death will stop you cold. Some essays are dense with history and argument, but his idea of living behind the Veil stays with you for years.
- You get a sly, unsettling voice as the unnamed narrator moves from a lynching he witnesses to life as a pianist and a man who can pass as white. The book is brief and clear-eyed, but its calmness makes the narrator’s compromises linger uncomfortably.
- Half poems, half story fragments, all of it humming: you drift from Georgia dusk and cane fields to Washington streets, meeting women like Karintha and Fern who stay with you longer than most full novels. Read it slow, out loud even, more like music than plot.
- Helga Crane never quite fits anywhere, not Harlem, not Copenhagen, and you feel her restlessness in your own chest as she keeps moving. It's short and beautifully written but genuinely suffocating by the end, so save it for when you can sit with that.
- You get a tense, unsparing novel about race, memory, and the stories a town tells itself, with Dr. Miller’s dignity set against the white violence gathering around Wellington. Chesnutt can be blunt and structurally busy, but the moral pressure keeps building, and the book’s arguments still feel uncomfortably alive.
- Uncle Julius spins these plantation folk tales for his new Northern employers, and every one just happens to serve his own quiet interests, which is half the fun. The dialect takes a few pages to settle into, but under the conjure magic there's real grief about slavery.
Our Nig; or, Sketches from the Life of a Free Black, 1859 — generally considered the first novel by an African American woman published in North America.
- You spend time with Iola as slavery tears apart her family and as she turns painful experience into clear-eyed work for Black education and independence. The novel can be openly didactic and melodramatic, but its arguments about race, womanhood, and self-respect still have real force.
1853, generally considered the first novel by an African American; it imagines the enslaved daughters of Thomas Jefferson.
- A Voice from the South non-fictionCooper writes like someone who knows she's the smartest person in the room and is tired of pretending otherwise; her line about when and where she enters still lands hard. Essays from 1892, sharp and sometimes formal, worth the patience if you like arguments built to last.
- You feel the Berry family’s displacement in every cramped room and dangerous New York street, while Dunbar’s anger at racist power stays close to the surface. It’s melodramatic and sometimes blunt, but Hester’s fear and Joe’s reckless hunger for freedom give the novel real emotional weight.
- You follow Emma Lou from a Boise family that prizes light skin through Harlem rooming houses and a bad romance with Alva, and Thurman never softens how cruel colorism gets, even among her own people. It's an uncomfortable, clear-eyed read that stays with you.
- You get a sharply funny, deliberately outrageous satire in Max Disher, who turns white overnight and watches racism reorganize itself around money, politics, and appearances. Schuyler’s caricatures can be blunt, but the book’s cool anger still lands, especially when every supposed solution becomes another business opportunity.
- Jake comes home from the war chasing one night's happiness through Harlem's cabarets and rent parties, and the whole book pulses like that: loose, sensual, alive. It's episodic rather than plotty, but his railroad talks with Ray, the brooding Haitian waiter, will stay with you.
1773, the first book of poems published by an African American.
- A Negro Explorer at the North Pole non-fiction
Henson was a member of Robert Peary's 1909 expedition that claimed the North Pole.
