Science Fiction: Where to Start
Science fiction novels to begin with, from Frankenstein in 1818 to the early 1960s.
- The creature is the surprise here: he reads Milton, aches for company, and argues his case so well you end up torn between him and Victor, who honestly behaves worse. Sad and stranger than the movies, told in letters from an Arctic ship.
- The Time Traveller lands in the year 802,701 expecting a paradise, and what he finds among the childlike Eloi and the pale Morlocks underground gets stranger and sadder the longer he stays. It's short, brisk Victorian science fiction with a genuinely bleak streak, especially that final beach.
- Wells writes the invasion like a newspaper report gone wrong, all named Surrey towns and refugee crowds, which makes it eerier than any spectacle. You'll spend chapters hiding in a wrecked house with a panicking curate, and honestly that dread stays with you longer than the Martians do.
- You’ll enjoy the wonderfully odd blend of scientific curiosity and pulpy adventure, especially Professor Lidenbrock’s impatient enthusiasm and Axel’s much more human fear as they descend through Sneffels volcano. The underground landscapes feel genuinely strange, though the old-fashioned science and brisk exposition can take some getting used to.
- Verne's poking fun at Americans here, and it lands: a club of bored Civil War artillerymen decide to fire a cannon at the moon, and Michel Ardan cheerfully volunteers to ride inside. You'll skim some ballistics math, but the deadpan enthusiasm carries you right through.
- You watch D-503, a true believer engineer in a city of glass walls and scheduled hours, come undone in his own diary as a woman named I-330 wrecks his tidy math. It's strange, feverish, sometimes hard to follow, and it got to Orwell before Orwell got to you.
- Pure pulp, and it knows it: John Carter wakes on Mars leaping thirty feet in the low gravity, befriends a four-armed green warrior, and everything moves at a sprint. If you want depth, look elsewhere; if you want swords and airships, you're set.
- Professor Challenger alone is worth it, a bearded egomaniac who throws a journalist down the stairs before agreeing to take him to a South American plateau where dinosaurs still roam. Pure boys'-own adventure, cheerfully implausible and very funny, if you're happy to switch your brain to holiday mode.
- Maskull grows new sense organs in the first hours on Tormance, and the book keeps doing that to you, offering a worldview each chapter then tearing it down. Harsh, strange, philosophically serious, clumsy in patches.
- Fair warning: there are no characters, no dialogue, just two billion years of future history, humanity rising and falling eighteen times over. If that sounds dry, skip it.
- Fair warning, it starts slow and stays sad, but watching Lionel Verney lose the whole world one friend at a time is quietly devastating, and Adrian and Raymond are really Shelley grieving Percy and Byron on the page. Read it when you want company in loneliness, not escape.
- You get a bizarre, feverish last-man-on-earth story in Adam Jeffson, whose Arctic expedition leaves him wandering through emptied cities, burning with awe, disgust, and loneliness. Shiel’s ornate prose can feel excessive, but if you enjoy decadent strangeness, the book’s solitude gets under your skin.
- You get a wonderfully pulpy blend of laboratory tinkering and interplanetary adventure, with Richard Seaton’s inventive optimism set against DuQuesne’s cold ambition. The science can be gloriously hand-wavy and the prose dated, but the sheer momentum makes it easy to see why space-opera writers kept returning to it.
- Jack Holloway, a crusty old prospector, finds a small golden-furred creature in his shower stall, and suddenly the whole planet's fate hinges on whether it can be called a person. It's breezy and warm, half courtroom drama, and gentler than you'd expect from 1962 sci-fi.
- Slippery Jim diGriz cracks safes and cons whole planets, then gets drafted by the cops who catch him, and half the fun is his cheerful running commentary on his own crimes. Breezy, fast, unashamedly pulpy; read it when you want a caper, not big ideas.
