- De Cleyre wrote poems the way she gave speeches, in grief and fury: elegies for the Haymarket men, hymns to liberty with no god in them. Rhetorical and sometimes overwrought, but completely sincere; you read her for the fire.
- An agitator's stories: short parables of tenement poverty and conscience, written between speeches and often reading like testimony. Rough as fiction, real as documents; her conviction gives even the slightest sketch some heat.
