To
MY WIFE

The poems in this book, with the exception of The Comedian as the Letter C and a few others, have been published before in Others, Secession, Rogue, The Soil, The Modern School, Broom, Contact, The New Republic, The Measure, The Little Review, The Dial, and particularly in Poetry: A Magazine of Verse, of Chicago, edited by Harriet Monroe.

Earthy Anecdote

Every time the bucks went clattering

Over Oklahoma

A firecat bristled in the way.

Wherever they went,

They went clattering,

Until they swerved

In a swift, circular line

To the right,

Because of the firecat.

Or until they swerved

In a swift, circular line

To the left,

Because of the firecat.

The bucks clattered.

The firecat went leaping,

To the right, to the left,

And

Bristled in the way.

Later, the firecat closed his bright eyes

And slept.

Invective against Swans

The soul, O ganders, flies beyond the parks

And far beyond the discords of the wind.

A bronze rain from the sun descending marks

The death of summer, which that time endures

Like one who scrawls a listless testament

Of golden quirks and Paphian caricatures,

Bequeathing your white feathers to the moon

And giving your bland motions to the air.

Behold, already on the long parades

The crows anoint the statues with their dirt.

And the soul, O ganders, being lonely, flies

Beyond your chilly chariots, to the skies.

  • DraculaBram Stoker
The whole thing unfolds through diaries and letters, so you're piecing it together alongside the characters, and Jonathan Harker's early chapters in the castle still genuinely unnerve. It sags a bit in the middle, but Mina turns out to be the sharpest person in the book.
  • A Portrait of the Artist as a Young ManJames Joyce
The prose literally grows up with Stephen, from baby talk to feverish theology, and the hellfire sermon in the middle will scare you even if you've never been Catholic. Slow going in spots, but if you like watching a mind assemble itself, this is that.
  • Moby DickHerman Melville
You settle in with Ishmael’s dry wit, Queequeg’s strange tenderness, and Melville’s gloriously unnecessary chapter on whale classification. It’s digressive, funny, and sometimes stubbornly slow, but Ahab’s grief-mad intensity gives all that wandering a dark pressure you keep thinking about.
