Dedicated
to
My Brother

Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink behind the lake,
The shadows lengthen
In Carcosa.

Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies
But stranger still is
Lost Carcosa.

Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
Must die unheard in
Dim Carcosa.

Song of my soul, my voice is dead;
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
Shall dry and die in
Lost Carcosa.
Cassilda’s Song in The King in Yellow, Act I, Scene 2

The Repairer of Reputations

The Time Machine H. G. Wells
The Time Traveller lands in the year 802,701 expecting a paradise, and what he finds among the childlike Eloi and the pale Morlocks underground gets stranger and sadder the longer he stays. It's short, brisk Victorian science fiction with a genuinely bleak streak, especially that final beach.
The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde
Wilde gives every character his best one-liners, so you'll laugh even as the whole thing curdles into something genuinely creepy. Lord Henry's lazy, poisonous charm is the real draw; you'll catch yourself agreeing with him and then feeling slightly guilty about it.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Arthur Conan Doyle
Twelve short cases you can dip into anywhere, and half the pleasure is Watson's patient bafflement while Holmes notices the scuffed boot or the dog that didn't bark. Cozy in the best way, though don't expect deep character arcs, just clever puzzles and fog.
