Red Harvest
The Continental Op rolls into a mining town so crooked he starts setting the gangs on each other just to clean it out, and halfway through he admits the killing is getting under his skin. Fast, brutal, funny in a dry way, zero comfort anywhere.
The Dain Curse
Messier than The Maltese Falcon, honestly, three cases stitched together with a cult, stolen diamonds, and a supposed family curse. But the Continental Op talking Gabrielle through her morphine withdrawal is Hammett at his most quietly decent, and worth the pulpy detours to reach.
The Maltese Falcon
You get Sam Spade, all sharp edges and private rules, moving through San Francisco on bad sleep and worse information. The dialogue is clipped and funny, but the real pleasure is watching him decide what his code is worth when Brigid O’Shaughnessy keeps changing the story.
