- Aurora Floyd EnglishIf you liked Lady Audley's Secret, this is Braddon in a warmer mood: Aurora is impulsive and flawed (she horsewhips a stablehand in one startling scene) but you end up rooting for her anyway. It's melodrama with blackmail and a murder, so come ready for that.
- My Brilliant Career EnglishSybylla Melvyn is prickly, vain, self-mocking, and completely alive, a teenage girl in dusty New South Wales who wants more than marriage and can't quite forgive herself for it. If you like narrators who argue with you (and themselves), she'll get under your skin.
- Shirley EnglishSlower and stranger than Jane Eyre, this one, but Shirley Keeldar herself is worth the wait: an heiress who runs her own estate and calls herself Captain Keeldar, half teasing, half serious. If you like Yorkshire moors, mill riots, and quiet, prickly friendships between women, settle in.
- The American Senator EnglishYou get Trollope’s dry social comedy at its most pointed, with Elias Gotobed delivering blunt American verdicts on English aristocracy and fox-hunting society while Arabella Trefoil treats courtship as strategy. It’s sprawling and occasionally slow, but rewarding if you enjoy watching manners, money, and marriage expose people.
- The Blithedale Romance EnglishYou get Hawthorne’s sharp, uneasy view of a reformist commune through Miles Coverdale, whose amused detachment keeps turning into jealousy and self-knowledge. Zenobia’s force, Priscilla’s vulnerability, and the strange presence of Westervelt make it moody and sometimes slow, but rewarding if you like moral ambiguity more than tidy idealism.
- The Enormous Room EnglishYou settle into Cummings’s strange, funny memoir of imprisonment, where fellow detainees become vividly peculiar personalities and bureaucratic French absurdity keeps rubbing against real fear. The prose is playful and unruly, so you enjoy it most when you’re willing to wander rather than look for a tidy war story.
