  • El Dorado
You get the Scarlet Pimpernel in Revolutionary Paris, working through danger with that wonderfully ridiculous public mask of Sir Percy Blakeney and much sharper courage underneath. It’s melodramatic and politically shadowed rather than subtle, but the disguises, narrow escapes, and doomed atmosphere make it satisfying if you like your adventure theatrical.
  • I Will Repay
Juliette swears on her father's deathbed to destroy the man who killed her brother, then makes the mistake of falling in love with him, and Orczy wrings every drop from that bind. Full-tilt Revolution melodrama, less Pimpernel than you'd expect, but the guilt is genuinely tense.
  • Lord Tony’s Wife
If you liked the Scarlet Pimpernel, this one takes you to Nantes during the Terror, where Carrier's drownings make the stakes genuinely grim, and Percy stays offstage longer than you'd want. The revenge plot against Yvonne is pure melodrama, but it's melodrama done with real conviction.
