- Tolstoy follows Anna's affair and Levin's awkward farming life in parallel, and somehow the mowing scenes stay with you as long as the tragedy does. It's long and unhurried, but you come out knowing these people better than some of your actual relatives.
- These beg to be read aloud, with all those rolling refrains ("the great grey-green greasy Limpopo River") and Kipling calling you O Best Beloved. The Elephant's Child alone earns it.
- Sybylla Melvyn is prickly, vain, self-mocking, and completely alive, a teenage girl in dusty New South Wales who wants more than marriage and can't quite forgive herself for it. If you like narrators who argue with you (and themselves), she'll get under your skin.
- You get a sprawling, rough-edged Australian adventure narrated by Dick Marston, whose loyalty to his reckless brother keeps pulling him back toward bushranging. Captain Starlight brings swagger and danger, but the book’s real strength is Dick’s uneasy honesty about the damage their freedom leaves behind.
- A locked room, a woman attacked inside it, and no way anyone got in or out. Rouletabille, the teenage reporter who cracks it, is cocky in a way that grows on you, and the solution actually plays fair.
- The fun here is the straight face: the Baron rides a cannonball and ties his horse to a church steeple in a snowdrift, and never once winks at you. Short, silly episodes, perfect for dipping into, less so if you need a plot to hold onto.
