Anna Karenina Leo Tolstoy, translated by Constance Garnett
Tolstoy follows Anna's affair and Levin's awkward farming life in parallel, and somehow the mowing scenes stay with you as long as the tragedy does. It's long and unhurried, but you come out knowing these people better than some of your actual relatives.
The Kingdom of God Is Within You Leo Tolstoy, translated by Leo Wiener non-fiction
Fair warning, this is Tolstoy the furious pamphleteer, not the novelist, and he repeats himself like a man grabbing your lapels. But his dismantling of churches that bless armies, and of ordinary people quietly enabling violence, still stings, and it reshaped Gandhi's whole thinking.
